Wallander (2008-10) - 1x02: Firewall.

Fear is something he has lived without for the duration of his existence. Fear is something he is only just becoming acquainted with thanks to the idiotic antics of his charge.

“We have to do something,” Raziel hisses at his superior while Metatron simply eyes the static-laced screen (where Nick’s face had been before the video connection went dead) with something close to apathy.

“He’s your toy,” the elder angel mutters, turning and striding effortlessly out of the room. “Fetch him yourself. I’m tired of cleaning your up after your messes.”

Raziel takes another panicked look at the screen, already well aware of the fact that he doesn’t know where Nick is and he honestly doesn’t know if he’s capable of reaching the human in time.

“Damn you,” he hisses, turning around to find Metatron already gone. “Damn you.”

Little did the church-goers realize, but there were indeed two divine messengers in their midst that day.

Raziel and Metatron exit their pew and step through the open doors of the church, glancing around at the humans milling about the lawn. They had dressed in suits for today’s outing, and considering the primarily dark clothes that adorn the parishioners, they made the right choice since blending in is their top priority for the moment.

It’s almost worrisome, how naive and ignorant all these humans are, despite the fact that the world is in fact ending right around them. He would tell them, if he could, but Raziel’s charge is Nick, not the general public of England and Ireland and Scotland and beyond.

Then, before he catches the blur of movement, there’s a small boy tackling him around the knees, startling Raziel enough that he nearly jumps. The young human smiles up at him, all childish innocence.

“Daddy says angels come here sometimes,” he says, and a glance towards Metatron on Raziel’s part confirms that they aren’t as mundane as they’d like to think when it comes to the eyes of the genuinely innocent.

Once the child lets go of his knees, Raziel bends down to his level. “Your father is right,” he says with a small smile, reaching out to tap the youngster’s nose. “There are angels everywhere. You just have to look close enough.”

His words seem to inspire some sort of indescribable glee in the young human, because he bounces up and down, then immediately races off, presumably to find his parents.

Raziel glances over to where Metatron is still standing just behind him, and gives him a helpless look. Metatron chuckles to himself, then nods in the direction of the steeple, silently agreeing that it’s time to go.
