not sure if anyone told you this yet, but SOPA didn't pass. ACTA did, which is so much worse because it's worldwide and not just for the internet--it's against piracy everywhere.

I think ACTA had already passed in the majority of governments it had been convened on by? I’m not entirely sure but I do believe that was one of the first points about it when it came up.

I’m not as worried about it as SOPA mostly because Obama signed it into law last year. There are failsafes on it all over the place and with the guarantee that Obama would veto anything resembling SOPA should it hit his desk (he’s on our side), it’s clear that ACTA was watered down significantly by the time it was signed into law.

I’m not saying it’s a good thing that it exists, but there were precautions taken by the governments signing it into law to make sure it didn’t turn the planet into a global dictatorship.

But, for all I know, we could already be headed that way and not even know it yet. I have no idea. I’m very wary of anything related to anti-piracy measures, online or not, so I’m definitely not in support of ACTA.

  1. luvrly said: With ACTA, from what I understand; has to be approved and ratified by all the signatories legislatures/Parliaments to go into effect. Several countries haven’t ratified it yet, so it’s not in effect either.
